Orhan Veli was born in Istanbul, in 1914. He studied philosophy, worked for the Turkish Post Office and as a literary translator. A founder of the Garip (“strange”) movement, he is one of Turkey’s most popular poets. His poems are innovative, appealing freely to the senses, heart and mind. He died following an accident, at the early age of 36. He is buried in Istanbul, in the Aşiyan cemetery, on the shores of the Bosphorus.
